Alto de El Perdón Ridge Viewpoint
Perched at 790 metres on the ridge directly south of Barañáin, the Alto de El Perdón is one of the most photographed spots on the entire Camino de Santiago — a dramatic silhouette of iron pilgrim sculptures set against sweeping views of the Pamplona basin and the distant Pyrenees. On a clear morning the light is simply extraordinary.
The Iron Pilgrim Sculpture
The iconic 'Donde se cruza el camino del viento con el de las estrellas' sculpture by Vicente Galbete lines the ridge crest: a procession of cut-iron medieval pilgrims — donkeys, monks, a knight — walking westward in perpetual silhouette against the sky.
The figures are best photographed at sunrise or in the golden hour before sunset, when the low-angle light turns them deep amber and the Pamplona valley below fills with morning mist or evening haze.
The Views & the Wind
On a clear day you can trace the full arc of the Pyrenean front from the ridge — Anie, Orhi and the Roncesvalles pass are all visible — while to the south the Navarrese plains stretch out in a patchwork of wheat, vineyard and poplar windbreak.
The ridge is notoriously windy; the line of modern wind turbines that share the crest with the sculpture are not incidental decoration. Bring a layer even in July.
Getting There from Barañáin
From Barañáin the ridge is about 10 km by road via the NA-601 towards Uterga, or you can walk the Camino Francés footpath from Pamplona's Cizur Menor neighbourhood in roughly 2.5 hours.
There is a small car park at the top and no entrance fee. The trail surface to the sculpture from the car park is unpaved and takes about 10 minutes on foot.
