Museo de las Encartaciones (Avellaneda)
Housed in a 16th-century tower house in the Encartaciones valley just outside Barakaldo, this small but richly detailed museum unpacks the distinct rural culture, law and daily life of western Bizkaia's Encartaciones region. It is one of the most atmospheric heritage sites in the whole province, yet almost entirely off the tourist trail.
A tower house frozen in time
The Torre de Avellaneda itself is the exhibit: thick stone walls, low-beamed ceilings and period furniture transport you straight into medieval Basque rural life without a single Hollywood flourish.
Permanent displays cover the peculiar legal autonomy the Encartaciones enjoyed for centuries, with original documents, traditional tools and beautifully crafted domestic objects that feel genuinely personal rather than cabinet-stuffed.
The valley setting
The museum sits in the green hamlet of Avellaneda, surrounded by oak woodland and farmsteads — walk ten minutes in any direction and you will find yourself completely alone on a muddy track with cows for company.
Combining the visit with a short loop through the valley makes for a half-day excursion that feels nothing like a conventional city trip, even though Barakaldo's centre is only about 20 km away.
