Monte Argalario Viewpoint
Rising above Barakaldo's western edge, Monte Argalario rewards a short uphill walk with sweeping panoramas across the Nervión estuary, the cranes and industrial poetry of the port, and on clear days the distant ridgeline of the Cantabrian mountains. It is the kind of viewpoint that makes you understand a city's geography in a single glance.
The walk up
A marked path leaves from the Retuerto neighbourhood and climbs through mixed pine and eucalyptus for about 40 minutes at an easy pace; the trail is well-maintained and signposted as part of the local green-routes network.
Early morning is magical: sea mist often pools in the estuary below while the hilltop catches the first sun, and you will likely share the summit only with dog-walkers and the occasional jogger.
What you see from the top
The panorama takes in the full sweep of the Nervión ría from Bilbao's city towers to the open sea near Getxo, with Barakaldo's post-industrial transformation — new parks replacing old steelworks — laid out like a map below you.
On the clearest winter days the snowcapped peaks of the Gorbeia massif appear to the south, adding an almost Alpine dimension to what is essentially an urban hike.
