Cambodia Landmine Museum

Sitting quietly on the road between Siem Reap and Banteay Srei, the Cambodia Landmine Museum is the most visited non-temple attraction in the district — and one of the most affecting museums in all of Southeast Asia. It tells the story of the country's landmine crisis and the remarkable man working to undo it.

What the museum covers

Founded by Aki Ra, a former child soldier who was forced to lay mines and has since dedicated his life to clearing them, the museum displays defused ordnance alongside deeply personal testimonies from survivors. Exhibits trace Cambodia's decades of civil war and the millions of unexploded devices that still litter the countryside.

The Relief Facility attached to the museum supports disabled landmine survivors, and visiting directly funds that work. It's a sobering but essential counterpoint to a day of temple-hopping — context that makes the resilience of the Khmer people all the more remarkable.

Combining it with your Banteay Srei day

The museum sits on the same road as Banteay Srei, roughly 25 km north of Siem Reap, making it a seamless add-on. Most visitors tack it onto an afternoon after the temple and Kbal Spean, when the emotional weight of the exhibits pairs well with the quiet of the drive back.

Allow at least one hour inside. The gift shop sells locally made crafts, and purchases directly benefit survivors. Entrance fees are modest and go straight to the relief programme.
