Bangor Castle & Walled Garden
Sitting proudly above the town centre, Bangor Castle is a turreted Victorian manor that looks lifted straight from a fairy tale. Its immaculate walled garden is one of North Down's most photogenic green escapes, free to enter and glorious from spring through autumn.
A Castle in the Heart of Town
Built in 1852 for Robert Ward, the castle now serves as Bangor's town hall, meaning you can stroll right up to its Gothic Revival facade without paying a penny. The honey-coloured stone towers glow warmly on a sunny afternoon, making it one of the most surprising civic buildings in Northern Ireland.
The grounds are threaded with manicured paths, heritage rose beds and herbaceous borders that peak in June and July. Families picnic on the lawns while locals walk dogs along the perimeter — it has the relaxed energy of a place that belongs entirely to the community.
The Walled Garden Experience
Step through the arched entrance of the walled garden and the noise of the town dissolves. Inside, raised beds overflow with dahlias, sweet peas and ornamental grasses arranged in a loose, romantic style that feels more like a private estate than a public park.
A small café operates inside the castle building nearby, so you can grab a coffee and carry it into the garden for one of the most pleasant half-hours Bangor offers. Come early on a weekday to have the roses almost entirely to yourself.
