Ballyholme Bay Headland

Walk to the northern headland above Ballyholme Bay and you'll find one of the most rewarding and crowd-free viewpoints on the North Down coast. On a clear day the Scottish hills of Galloway are visible across the water — a view that earns its fifteen-minute stroll from the beach.

The Walk to the Top

From Ballyholme beach car park, follow the coastal path northeast along the grassy clifftop. The path is informal but easy underfoot, rising gently through gorse and wildflowers before opening onto a broad headland with unobstructed views across Belfast Lough toward the Antrim hills and, on the clearest days, the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.

This is a working-class local secret rather than a tourist trail — you're more likely to encounter a retired couple walking a spaniel than a tour group. That's precisely the point. Bring a flask of tea and sit on the grass for a while.

Golden Hour & Seasonal Highlights

The headland faces roughly northwest, making it a superb spot for late-afternoon and evening light in summer when the sun sets over the lough in long amber streaks. Photographers who time it right get the yachts of Ballyholme Yacht Club silhouetted against the glowing water below.

In spring, the gorse burns vivid yellow along the clifftop and skylarks sing overhead — a sensory combination that feels disproportionately wild for a place a ten-minute walk from a seaside town. Autumn brings dramatic cloud formations rolling in off the Irish Sea.
