Mercado Municipal de Baiona

Tucked just off the main Praza do Concello, Baiona's small but perfectly stocked municipal market is where local households actually shop, making it a far more authentic window into Galician daily life than any craft fair. The stalls are dominated by Galicia's extraordinary larder: purple-tinged Padrón peppers, percebes (goose barnacles), fresh Ría mussels and wheels of tetilla cheese.

What to look for

Arrive before 10 am on Saturday when the fish stalls are freshest and the fisherwomen — many still in traditional aprons — are selling whatever came off the boats that morning. Percebes are priced by the gram and worth every cent.

The cheese corner stocks creamy tetilla (named for its breast shape) alongside the sharper San Simón da Costa, smoked over birch wood — both travel well vacuum-packed for the journey home.

Timing your visit

The market operates Tuesday to Saturday mornings, with Saturday being the busiest and most rewarding day. By noon most of the best fish and shellfish is gone, so earlier is always better.

A handful of stalls sell prepared empanadas gallegas — the flat, golden pies filled with tuna and pimento or with zorza (seasoned pork) — which make an ideal picnic lunch to take down to the waterfront.
