Bahia Palace (Palais de la Bahia)
Commissioned by Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed ben Moussa in the 1860s and named 'the brilliant one' in Arabic, Bahia Palace is Marrakech's most jaw-dropping act of architectural ambition — a 19th-century power statement carved in cedar, zellige and stucco that still silences visitors today.
A Palace Built to Impress for Eternity
Ba Ahmed summoned the finest craftsmen from Fez, who spent decades hand-carving cedar ceilings, cutting zellige mosaics tile by tile, and filling 150 rooms with interiors Morocco had never seen before. The result is a complex spreading across 8,000 m² of courtyards, gardens and intimate salons, each room more intricate than the last.
The harem wing — designed for Ba Ahmed's four wives and concubines — is the emotional heart of the visit: a vast tiled courtyard ringed by private chambers that whisper of a life of extraordinary privilege and confinement in equal measure. Ba Ahmed died in 1900, and the palace has stood largely silent ever since.
How to Make the Most of Your Visit
Arrive at the gate right when it opens at 9 am — crowds build fast and the morning light floods the painted ceilings in a way that afternoon visits simply cannot match. The complex is genuinely vast and disorienting, so budget at least 90 minutes and consider hiring one of the local guides at the entrance for a small fee; the rooms are largely empty and English signage is sparse.
The palace sits on the southern rim of the Medina, a short walk from the Mellah. El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs are both within a 10-minute stroll, making this the natural anchor of a half-day southern Medina loop.
