Thunderball Grotto, Staniel Cay, Exumas
Named after the 1965 James Bond film shot here, Thunderball Grotto is a sea cave on a tiny rock islet near Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays whose interior glows with shafts of light filtering through underwater openings. Snorkellers swim through submerged arches into a cathedral chamber alive with sergeant-major fish, angelfish and parrotfish — all set against walls of coral lit by natural spotlights
Inside the Grotto
At low tide you can enter the cave by swimming through one of two underwater passages, each requiring only a short duck-dive of about a metre. Inside, the chamber opens to a domed roof with two large natural skylights that send columns of sunlight piercing into the blue water below — the effect is otherworldly, particularly between 10 am and noon when the sun is overhead.
The fish inside are remarkably tame, accustomed to snorkellers who scatter breadcrumbs (a local guide tradition). Hundreds of sergeant-majors swirl around you in tight silver clouds while larger snappers cruise the edges of the light beams.
Getting to Staniel Cay
Staniel Cay is accessible by a 20-minute charter flight from Nassau or a day trip by fast boat from Great Exuma. The Staniel Cay Yacht Club is the social hub of the island and rents small Boston Whalers by the half-day, allowing you to explore the grotto, the famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay and the nurse sharks of Compass Cay all in one loop.
Visit the grotto at high tide with caution — the entry passages become deeper and the current can be strong. Low tide, ideally combined with midday sun, gives the most dramatic light show and the easiest entry for non-divers.
