Straw Market, Nassau

Sitting at the heart of downtown Nassau on Bay Street, the Nassau Straw Market is a sprawling covered bazaar where more than 400 vendors sell handwoven hats, baskets, bags and wood carvings. It is loud, colourful, and unapologetically alive — the closest thing the Bahamas has to a traditional craft souk.

What to Buy and How to Bargain

The market's signature items are hand-plaited straw goods made from silver-top palm — a craft tradition that dates back centuries in the Bahamas. Look for tightly woven beach bags, wide-brimmed sun hats and intricately patterned placemats; quality varies, so handle items carefully before buying.

Bargaining is expected and good-natured. A hat with a $30 sticker is often available for $18–20 if you smile, show genuine interest and don't rush. Vendors respond well to customers who engage with them as people rather than simply demanding the lowest price.

Beyond the Stalls

The current market building, a large open-air structure with a bright orange roof, was rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original in 2001. It sits directly opposite Prince George Wharf, where cruise ships dock, so mornings can be very busy; visit after 2 pm for a calmer browse.

Just a short walk west along Bay Street you'll find the Junkanoo Museum, which explains the dazzling costumed festival that erupts on Boxing Day and New Year's Day — buying a small Junkanoo mask at the Straw Market makes for a far more meaningful souvenir once you understand the tradition.
