Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island

Stretching three miles along the Atlantic side of tiny Harbour Island, Pink Sands Beach earns its name from crushed coral and foraminifera shells that tint the sand a delicate rose. It consistently ranks among the world's most beautiful beaches, yet feels refreshingly uncrowded even in peak season.

Why the Pink Colour Is Real

The blush hue comes from billions of microscopic single-celled organisms called foraminifera, whose red and pink shells mix with white coral sand to create the signature colour. The effect is most vivid in the early morning and late afternoon when the low sun saturates the tones.

The water directly in front of the beach is a calm, reef-protected turquoise that deepens to cobalt further out, making it ideal for both paddling toddlers and snorkellers chasing parrotfish and spotted eagle rays.

Getting There and Getting Around

Fly into North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), then take a three-minute water taxi across the harbour to Dunmore Town, the island's only settlement. The whole island is less than three miles long, so golf carts are the standard mode of transport — rent one from any of the half-dozen vendors near the dock for around $60 USD per day.

Harbour Island has a handful of boutique hotels set just steps from the beach, including the iconic Pink Sands Resort, which has hosted everyone from Mick Jagger to fashion editors on deadline. Book well ahead for the Christmas–April high season.
