Geroldsauer Waterfall & Mill Trail
Most visitors never leave the spa promenades, which means the Geroldsauer Wasserfall — a 15-metre cascade tucked inside a narrow sandstone gorge just 6 km south of the city centre — stays blissfully uncrowded. A short forest trail leads to a 19th-century mill that still grinds grain, and the whole loop takes barely 90 minutes.
The Walk
Park or alight from bus 216 at Geroldsau village and follow the signed Wasserfallweg path along the Geroldsauer Bach stream. The trail is wide and well-maintained, passing mossy boulders and old-growth beech trees before the gorge narrows and the sound of falling water announces the cascade. The waterfall itself drops in two tiers over reddish Buntsandstein rock and feeds a small pool popular with local children in summer.
A wooden footbridge crosses directly in front of the falls for the classic shot. Continue 200 metres upstream to the Geroldsauer Mühle, a working watermill and inn where you can order fresh-ground wholegrain bread, apple Streuselkuchen and cold Rothaus Tannenzäpfle beer on a shaded terrace.
When to Go
Spring (April–May) delivers the highest water volume and the most dramatic cascade, while October turns the surrounding beeches into a tunnel of amber and copper. Summer weekends bring local families but never real crowds — arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 for near-solitude.
The trail is mostly flat with one short rocky section near the falls; sturdy trainers are fine. Dogs are welcome and the mill inn keeps a water bowl outside the door.
