Baden-Baden Weekly Farmers' Market on Leopoldsplatz
Every Saturday morning, Leopoldsplatz transforms into a compact but seriously good farmers' market where Black Forest producers line up their wares beneath the chestnut trees — smoked Schwarzwälder ham carved to order, raw-milk cheeses from Ortenau valley farms, and jars of dark fir-honey that taste like the forest itself.
What to Buy
Look for the Metzgerei stalls selling Schwarzwälder Schinken — the real, air-dried, fir-smoked version — alongside Lyoner sausage and venison salami. The cheese vendors typically carry Weißlacker, a pungent washed-rind wheel from nearby Allgäu, and a creamy local Quark sold by the ladle that makes an extraordinary breakfast with the market's wild-berry jams.
Several Baden wine producers set up tasting tables — the Ortenau and Kraichgau sub-regions produce underrated Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) that rarely leave the region. A tasting usually costs €1–2 per glass.
Timing and Atmosphere
The market runs from around 07:00 to 14:00 every Saturday and a smaller version appears on Wednesday mornings. Arrive before 09:00 for the best selection and to catch the moment when the town's chefs do their own shopping — a reliable indicator of quality.
A flower stall at the southern end sells locally grown dahlias and sunflowers in summer; in December the same spot hosts a modest but charming Weihnachtsmarkt that smells overwhelmingly of mulled Glühwein and roasted almonds.
