Mercat Municipal de Badalona
Tucked inside a handsome early-20th-century iron-and-brick building on Carrer del Mercat, Badalona's covered market is where local families have shopped for generations — and where you can fill a picnic bag with the same Maresme strawberries, salt-cod fritters and house-made botifarra sausages that never make it to tourist-trail supermarkets.
What to buy and taste
The fish counters at the back of the hall receive direct landings from the Badalona fishing fleet — look for fresh espardenyes (sea cucumbers), razor clams and the fat, sweet gambetes de Badalona, tiny local prawns prized by Barcelona chefs. Arrive before 10:00 for the best selection.
The charcuterie stalls are stacked with fuet, llonganissa and the peppery bull negre that pairs perfectly with pa amb tomàquet. Several vendors will vacuum-pack cured meats for travellers flying home.
The social ritual
Like all great Catalan markets, this one has a bar tucked into the corner where stallholders take their mid-morning break over a canya (small draught beer) and a plate of croquetes. Pull up a stool — it is the fastest way to feel like a local.
Saturday mornings bring a small outdoor extension along the adjacent street with seasonal vegetables, flowers and the occasional antique dealer. The whole scene wraps up by 14:00, so plan your visit for the morning.
