Wildpark Bad Mergentheim
One of Germany's finest wildlife parks spreads across 60 hectares of native woodland on the edge of town, home to wolves, lynx, brown bears, wild boar, red deer, and over 40 other Central European species — all in large, naturalistic enclosures that feel nothing like a conventional zoo.
The Star Residents
The European grey wolf pack is the undisputed highlight: the Wildpark has been running a respected wolf research and conservation programme for decades, and the spacious forest enclosure allows genuinely natural pack behaviour. Feeding times (posted at the entrance) draw a crowd but offer the best chance of seeing the whole pack in motion.
The Eurasian lynx habitat is cleverly designed with elevated walkways so visitors look across at eye level into the cats' territory rather than down into a pit. Early morning is the best time to catch the lynx active — they tend to retreat into the trees by mid-morning.
Planning a Full Day Here
The park is large enough to fill a comfortable half-day, and the waymarked trails through the oak and beech woodland are pleasant walks in their own right even between enclosures. The on-site restaurant serves hot meals and decent Kaffee und Kuchen, and there are plenty of picnic tables if you prefer to bring your own food.
Children love the adventure playground near the entrance, and the park runs regular ranger-guided tours in German during school holidays — worth booking ahead if your group includes young wildlife enthusiasts. The park is stroller and wheelchair accessible on the main paths.
