Café-Restaurant Zauberhaft

Tucked into a half-timbered building just off the Marktplatz, Zauberhaft is the kind of unpretentious, owner-run restaurant that regulars guard jealously — expect generous portions of regional Franconian cooking, a short but well-chosen wine list leaning on Taubertal and Württemberg producers, and genuinely warm service.

What to Order

The Maultaschen — large Swabian pasta parcels filled with minced meat and spinach, served in a clear beef broth or pan-fried with caramelised onions — are outstanding here and a regional staple you should not leave without trying. Follow them with the Zwiebelrostbraten, a slow-roasted beef sirloin blanketed in crispy fried onions and served with hand-cut Spätzle.

For dessert, the Apfelküchle (apple fritters dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with vanilla sauce) are a Franconian comfort-food classic. Wash everything down with a glass of Taubertal Müller-Thurgau, a light, aromatic white that pairs beautifully with the region's pork and noodle dishes.

When to Go and How to Book

Lunch service runs from 11:30 and is popular with local workers, so arrive early or expect a short wait. The dinner atmosphere is calmer and the kitchen has more time to shine — Thursday evenings often feature a short seasonal special board.

Reservations are advisable on Friday and Saturday evenings, especially in summer. The small terrace at the front faces a quiet side street and is one of the nicest spots in town for a long, unhurried lunch in good weather.
