Großer Burgberg Summit Terrace
The open terrace at the top of the Burgberg gondola is the single best viewpoint in Bad Harzburg, offering an uncluttered panorama that sweeps from the wooded Harz plateau in the south to the flat North German Plain in the north — a genuinely rare geographical transition you can see in a single glance. It is also the easiest summit in the region to reach.
What You See
On a clear day the Brocken, the Harz's highest peak at 1,141 m, dominates the southern skyline with its characteristic rounded silhouette and the white radar dome on top. To the north the land flattens dramatically into the Harzvorland, and on exceptional days the Elm ridge near Wolfenbüttel is visible.
The terrace faces west and south-west, making it ideal for late-afternoon visits when the light turns golden over the forest canopy. The contrast between the dark spruce plantations and the lighter deciduous patches creates a patchwork that is particularly beautiful in May and October.
The Viewing Tower and Trails
A short path from the gondola station leads to a reconstructed stone viewing tower on the Burgberg plateau. Climbing its two floors adds another 10 metres of elevation and opens up the northern view that the terrace restaurant partially blocks.
Several marked hiking trails depart from the summit, including one that loops back down through the forest to the Kurpark in about 45 minutes — a satisfying way to descend if the weather is good and you want to avoid repeating the cable car.
