Baumwipfelpfad Harz Treetop Walk
Opened on the edge of Bad Harzburg, the Baumwipfelpfad Harz is a 1.2-kilometre elevated boardwalk that winds through and above the forest canopy at heights of up to 26 metres, ending at a spectacular spiral observation tower — and it remains surprisingly under-visited compared to similar trails in Bavaria or the Black Forest. It is the most exhilarating way to understand the scale and texture of t
The Boardwalk Experience
The path begins at ground level and rises gradually on wooden stilts through oak, beech and spruce, with information panels explaining the forest ecosystem, local wildlife (red squirrels, black woodpeckers, Harz lynx reintroduction) and the history of timber harvesting in the mountains. The structure sways very gently in the wind, which adds to the sense of being genuinely airborne.
In spring the canopy is a luminous acid green as the beeches leaf out; in autumn it burns orange and gold. Both seasons offer completely different but equally rewarding experiences, and the boardwalk is wide enough for prams and wheelchairs for most of its length.
The Observation Tower
The highlight is the free-standing spiral tower at the end of the walk, which rises above the treetops and offers a 360-degree view over the Harz forest to the Brocken and beyond. The tower is designed without stairs — a continuous ramp spirals up and back down — making it fully accessible and creating a disorientating, almost dreamlike ascent.
On busy weekends the tower can queue, but arriving before 10:00 or after 16:00 usually means you have the top platform almost to yourself. The view at golden hour, with the Brocken silhouetted against an orange sky, is one of the best photographs you can take in the entire Harz region.
