L'Aigle d'Or Restaurant
Tucked into a handsome 18th-century townhouse on Rue Adélaïde Riche, L'Aigle d'Or has been feeding serious eaters in Azay-le-Rideau for decades with cooking that is rooted in Touraine tradition but never stuck in the past. White tablecloths, local wine pairings and a terrace shaded by a mature plane tree make lunch here a genuine occasion.
What to order
The kitchen leans hard into the Loire larder: expect pike-perch (sandre) from the river served with beurre blanc, rillettes de Tours as an opener, and seasonal mushrooms from the Vienne valley forests. The cheese trolley reliably carries a ripe Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine alongside a Selles-sur-Cher and a wedge of aged Crottin.
The set lunch menu (typically two or three courses at a fixed price) represents outstanding value for the quality on the plate and is popular with both locals and visiting château-goers — book ahead in July and August.
Pairing with Loire wines
The wine list is a love letter to the region, with strong representation from Vouvray, Chinon, Bourgueil and the local Azay-le-Rideau AOC. The sommelier is knowledgeable and happy to recommend a glass rather than a bottle if you are cycling onward.
A dry Vouvray from Domaine Huet alongside the sandre, followed by a light Chinon rouge with the cheese, is a pairing that makes complete sense in this landscape — you are, after all, eating and drinking within a few kilometres of where everything was grown.
