Château d'Azay-le-Rideau
Rising from an island in the Indre river, Château d'Azay-le-Rideau is one of the Loire Valley's most photogenic masterpieces — a 16th-century palace that seems to float between sky and water. Its delicate turrets, chequerboard stonework and perfect reflections make it unmissable at any hour.
A palace built for pleasure
Commissioned in 1518 by royal financier Gilles Berthelot, the château was among the first French Renaissance buildings to blend Italian decorative ideals with the traditional Loire turreted silhouette. The grand staircase inside, with its open loggia and sculpted salamanders, is a highlight of the interior tour.
The furnished rooms trace life at court through tapestries, carved fireplaces and period furniture, while a permanent exhibition explains the château's turbulent history — including its seizure by François I after Berthelot fled a treason charge.
Son et Lumière after dark
Every summer evening from late April to September, the château hosts 'Azay-le-Rideau, Imaginaire', an immersive sound-and-light walk through the park and around the moat. Coloured projections transform the white tuffeau stone façades into shifting tapestries of light and narrative.
Arrive at dusk to catch the last natural light fading over the water before the show begins — the transition from golden hour to full illumination is genuinely magical and produces extraordinary photographs.
