Avranches Saturday Morning Market
Every Saturday the Place du Marché and surrounding streets fill with one of the Manche département's liveliest weekly markets, drawing farmers, cheese-makers, cider producers and fishmongers from across the region. It is the single best place to eat and shop like a Norman local.
What to Expect at the Stalls
Arrive by 8:30 for the best pick of the morning: creamy Camembert and pungent Livarot straight from farm producers, trays of local oysters from the bay, blood sausages, andouille de Vire, and buckwheat crêpes cooked to order on a griddle right in front of you.
Cider and calvados producers set up small tasting tables — it is entirely normal and expected to sample before you buy. Look for bottles labelled 'cidre bouché fermier' for the real farmhouse article.
Beyond the Food
Flower stalls, second-hand books, linen tablecloths and hand-thrown pottery fill the outer rows, making the market equally good for browsing even if you are travelling light.
The café terraces ringing the square fill quickly after 9:00; grab a café crème and a pain au chocolat and watch the market theatre unfold around you. By noon the stalls are packing up, so an early start is essential.
