Sanctuary of Montevergine

Clinging to Monte Vergine at 1,270 metres, this Benedictine monastery has drawn pilgrims since 1126 and rewards every visitor with jaw-dropping Apennine panoramas. Whether you ride the cable car from Mercogliano or hike up from Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo, the arrival feels genuinely earned.

A Mountain Monastery Built on Faith

The Sanctuary of Montevergine is a major pilgrimage destination dedicated to the Black Madonna, whose gilded icon has been venerated here for nearly nine centuries. The complex grew from a hermit's cell into a sprawling Benedictine abbey, and today its two churches — the ancient Basilica and the striking 20th-century Basilica Nuova with its winged roof — stand side by side in dramatic contrast.

Inside, the gold-gilded pulpit, painted ceilings and votive treasures accumulated over centuries create an atmosphere of overwhelming beauty. Allow at least an hour to walk the full compound, visit the museum of ex-votos and absorb the silence of the cloister.

Getting Up There — and the View That Awaits

The easiest ascent is the panoramic funicular railway (funivia) from Mercogliano, which climbs through oak and chestnut forest in about seven minutes. On a clear day the summit terrace opens up a sweeping view across the Irpinia valleys all the way to the Tyrrhenian coast.

Hikers can follow the Via Sacra from Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo — a waymarked pilgrimage path of roughly 5 km that passes stone chapels and beech groves before emerging at the sanctuary gates. Spring and autumn deliver the most dramatic light and the fewest crowds.

Practical Matters

The sanctuary is free to enter and open daily. The funivia from Mercogliano runs regularly and costs a few euros return; check seasonal timetables before you go. A small café near the top sells hot drinks and local hazelnut sweets — perfect after the hike.
