Corso Vittorio Emanuele & the Historic Centre

Avellino's elegant main boulevard pulses with café life, baroque façades and a 36-metre clock tower that has kept time for the city since the 17th century. This is the living room of Irpinia — stroll it at the passeggiata hour and you'll feel like a local within minutes.

The Spine of the City

Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the backbone of Avellino's social life, lined with independent boutiques, pasticcerie and gelaterias that have been feeding the city for generations. The street leads naturally to Piazza della Libertà, where the Bishop's Palace, the sculpture 'Ali dell'Anima' and the city's main gathering benches create a true civic heart.

Turn off the Corso along Via Duomo and you reach the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta e San Modestino — a majestic baroque church whose ornate façade and richly decorated interior make it the architectural crown of the historic centre. A few steps further, the 36-metre-high Clock Tower, the city's most recognisable symbol, looms over the rooftops.

Hidden Depths: The Lombard Tunnels

Beneath the historic centre lies one of Avellino's best-kept secrets: a network of medieval Lombard tunnels carved into the tufa rock. Today these atmospheric corridors host immersive multimedia installations that transform the ancient passageways into a sensory museum dedicated to memory and well-being — a genuinely surprising detour from the sunlit streets above.

The neighbourhood also conceals the Casino del Principe, a 16th-century palazzo built for Prince Camillo Caracciolo, and the Civic Museum of Villa Amendola, whose botanic garden is a quiet green refuge in the heart of the city.
