Marché de la Croix-Rousse, Lyon
Every Tuesday through Sunday morning, the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse transforms into one of the finest outdoor food markets in France, a 600-metre ribbon of stalls where Lyonnais chefs and home cooks shop side by side. This is not a tourist market — it is a working neighbourhood institution where the produce is exceptional and the vendors opinionated.
What to Buy and Eat
The market is the place to encounter the full glory of Rhône-Alpes dairy: Saint-Marcellin cheese at its perfectly runny peak, aged Beaufort from the Savoie Alps, and fresh chèvre wrapped in chestnut leaves. Charcuterie stalls pile up rosette de Lyon sausage, cervelas studded with pistachios and truffles, and paper-thin slices of jambon persillé that glow like stained glass.
Fruit and vegetable vendors bring produce from the nearby Drôme and Ardèche valleys — look for the flat Charentais melons in July, the Valence apricots in June, and the extraordinary variety of heritage tomatoes through August. Several stalls sell ready-to-eat dishes: quenelles de brochet (pike dumplings) in sauce Nantua, lentilles du Puy, and tarte à la praline in alarming shades of pink.
The Croix-Rousse Neighbourhood
After shopping, wander the Croix-Rousse plateau — the former silk-weaving district known locally as 'la colline qui travaille' (the hill that works), in contrast to Fourvière, 'la colline qui prie' (the hill that prays). The wide, airy streets lined with 19th-century canuts (weavers') workshops feel entirely different from Vieux-Lyon, with an artsy, slightly bohemian energy.
Stop at the Fresque des Canuts on Rue Duviard, a 1,200 sq m trompe-l'oeil mural depicting neighbourhood life with such photographic precision that first-time visitors literally walk towards it expecting a real street.
