Promenade du Loch Viewpoint
Perched on the ridge above Saint-Goustan, the Promenade du Loch is a tree-shaded terrace walk that delivers the best elevated panorama of the Auray River valley without requiring any real effort to reach. On a clear day the tidal estuary glitters silver all the way to the Gulf of Morbihan.
The View & When to Go
The promenade runs along the top of a steep wooded escarpment, with several open belvedere points where the trees part to reveal the full sweep of the river below. The most dramatic viewpoint is at the southern end of the terrace, where you can see Saint-Goustan's rooftops, the old stone bridge and the sinuous river bending toward the sea in a single frame.
Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the magic windows: the low light turns the river into hammered copper and picks out the warm stone of the medieval quarter in extraordinary detail. Photographers should bring a tripod — the light is beautiful but fleeting.
The Walk Itself
The full promenade is an easy, flat 600-metre stroll through a canopy of mature oaks and chestnuts, dotted with benches and a handful of information panels about the town's history. It connects the upper town (near the church of Saint-Gildas) to a staircase that drops directly down to the quayside — making it a natural start or finish to any exploration of Saint-Goustan.
In spring the woodland understorey is carpeted with wild garlic and bluebells, adding a botanical bonus to the view. The walk is pram- and wheelchair-accessible for most of its length on the upper section.
