Auray Monday Market

Every Monday morning the streets around Place de la République and Rue du Lait fill with one of the largest and most authentic weekly markets in the Morbihan, drawing farmers, fishmongers and cheese-makers from across southern Brittany. This is not a tourist market — it's where locals actually shop, and the produce quality is exceptional.

What to Buy & Where to Look

Arrive before 8 am to catch the fishmongers at their best: gleaming langoustines from the Gulf of Morbihan, fat oysters from the Étel River estuary and whole sea bass packed in crushed ice. The cheese stalls are equally compelling — look for fermier Camembert and aged Comté alongside local Breton butter sold in thick golden slabs.

The vegetable section is a riot of colour in summer: purple artichokes the size of a fist (a Breton speciality), fat strawberries from Plougastel, bundles of flat-leaf parsley and trays of shallots. Wander to the far end of the market for the farm-direct stalls where you can buy directly from the grower, often at prices well below the supermarket.

Beyond the Food Stalls

The Monday market also has a strong brocante (antiques and second-hand) section along the side streets, where you can unearth vintage Quimper faïence pottery, old Breton linen and maritime curiosities at genuinely reasonable prices. Budget at least an hour if you enjoy a rummage.

A ring of mobile crêpe and galette vans sets up around the market perimeter — grab a freshly made buckwheat galette with salted butter and a paper cup of cidre brut for the quintessential Breton market breakfast, eaten standing up, watching the world go by.
