Belvedere della Maddalena Terrace

Perched on the cliff directly above the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, this small terrace rewards the ten-minute climb from the piazza with a sweeping 180-degree panorama that takes in Atrani's terracotta rooftops, the open Tyrrhenian Sea and the silhouette of Amalfi to the west. It is almost entirely unknown to day-trippers.

The Climb and the Reward

From Piazza Umberto I, follow the steep staircase alongside the church — the path is signed 'Sentiero dei Limoni' at its base — and within ten minutes you emerge onto a wide stone terrace shaded by a single stone pine.

The view south and west is unobstructed: on a clear morning you can see the island of Capri floating on the horizon like a grey mirage, and fishing boats leaving silver wakes on the water below.

The terrace is most spectacular at golden hour, roughly 30 minutes before sunset, when the light turns the village's painted facades the colour of warm honey.

Photography and Practical Notes

Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone's panorama mode — the terrace is wide enough to capture both the village and the open sea in a single frame.

There are no guardrails on the seaward edge, so take care with children and in wet weather when the stone becomes slippery.

A stone bench on the northern side of the terrace faces inland toward the Lattari Mountains, offering a completely different composition of terraced lemon groves and ancient mule paths.
