Orquidário Takebayashi — Pick-Your-Own Strawberry Farm
Just outside the city, the Orquidário Takebayashi is one of Atibaia's best-kept rural secrets: a working farm where visitors wade into neat rows of hydroponic strawberry plants, pick their own fruit and eat it still warm from the greenhouse sun. It is the most direct way to understand why Atibaia earned the title of Brazil's National Strawberry Capital.
The Pick-Your-Own Experience
Guests are handed a small basket and let loose in the greenhouse tunnels, where plump red morangos hang at perfect picking height. The farm uses hydroponic cultivation, meaning the fruit is exceptionally clean, uniform and sweet — you pay by weight at the end, and the temptation to eat half your haul on the spot is entirely expected and tolerated.
Beyond strawberries, the property grows orchids — the farm's namesake — and seasonal flowers, making it a genuinely photogenic stop even for visitors who arrive outside peak strawberry season (June–September).
Rural Atibaia Beyond the Farm
The Takebayashi property sits within Atibaia's broader rural tourism circuit, known locally as the Rota do Morango (Strawberry Route), which links several family farms offering pick-your-own experiences, artisanal jams, fresh juices and farm-to-table lunches. Renting a car for a half-day loop of the route is one of the most rewarding things you can do in the region.
The farms along the route are small, family-run and genuinely welcoming. Many have been cultivating strawberries for three or four generations, and the owners are usually happy to explain their growing methods if you ask — a refreshing contrast to the polished agritourism experiences found closer to São Paulo.
