Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden
Tucked behind an unassuming brick facade on 24th Avenue, Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden is a genuine piece of living New York history — the oldest beer garden in the entire city, and still one of its most joyful places to spend a long, sunny afternoon.
A Century of Community Drinking
Founded in 1910 by Czech and Slovak immigrants, Bohemian Hall has served as an unofficial community centre for Astoria for well over a century. The cavernous outdoor garden — shaded by mature trees and lined with long communal picnic tables — can hold hundreds of revellers and yet somehow always feels convivial rather than chaotic.
The hall itself is a landmarked piece of New York's immigrant history, with original Bohemian decorations still intact inside. On summer weekends the noise of live bands and clinking steins can be heard half a block away.
What to Drink and Eat
The taps lean heavily Czech and Central European — expect well-kept Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, and rotating craft options alongside classic American lagers. Pair a cold half-litre with a bratwurst, pierogi, or a plate of kielbasa from the kitchen window for the full experience.
The garden is entirely outdoors, so this is very much a fair-weather destination — but on a warm New York evening, with a Pilsner in hand and a live band warming up, there is arguably no better place in all five boroughs.
Live Music & Events
Bohemian Hall hosts a packed calendar of live music, silent disco nights, local dance performances, and community events throughout the spring and summer season. Check their website before visiting, as themed evenings and ticketed concerts sell out quickly.
The venue is a 10-minute walk from the 30th Avenue N/W subway stop, making it easy to combine with a day spent exploring Astoria's Greek restaurant strip, the Museum of the Moving Image, or a sunset stroll through Astoria Park.
