Astoria Park & Hell Gate Bridge Overlook

Perched on the East River between the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the dramatic steel arch of Hell Gate Bridge, Astoria Park delivers one of New York City's most jaw-dropping and least-crowded skyline panoramas — and it costs absolutely nothing to enjoy.

A 60-Acre Riverside Escape

Stretching along the Hell Gate strait of the East River, Astoria Park covers nearly 60 acres of waterfront green space that feels worlds away from the Manhattan grind just across the water.

The park's great lawn — the open expanse between the pool and Hell Gate Bridge — is ideal for picnicking, sunbathing, or simply watching tugboats and kayakers glide past while the city skyline glitters in the background.

Bridges, Pools & Athletic Pursuits

At the southern end of the park, an all-weather 400-metre running track sits directly beneath the RFK Bridge, offering a surreal backdrop for a morning jog. A newly renovated skate park under the bridge draws talented boarders and BMX riders throughout the day.

The park is also home to New York City's largest public swimming pool — an Olympic-scale facility that hosted the US Olympic Trials in 1936 and again in 1964, and remains one of the few operating public pools in the five boroughs.

When to Go

Sunrise and the golden hour before sunset are the magic windows: the light catches the steel arches of both bridges and turns the Manhattan skyline amber across the water. Summer evenings often bring informal gatherings, yoga classes, and occasional outdoor events on the lawn.

The park is easily reached via the N/Q trains to Astoria Blvd station, with the waterfront path just an eight-minute walk away.
