Mercato Settimanale di Assisi (Saturday Market)
Every Saturday morning the streets around Piazza Matteotti fill with Umbrian farmers, cheese vendors and spice sellers in one of the most authentic weekly markets in the region. Skip the tourist-shop ceramics and come here to eat, taste and shop like a local.
What to Buy
Look for small-batch norcineria — cured meats from the Valnerina including mazzafegati (spiced pork liver sausage) and lonza di maiale. The vendors are used to curious visitors and are generally happy to let you taste before you buy.
Truffle products are everywhere in Umbria but the market stalls offer far better value than the boutiques on Via San Rufino. Black summer truffle paste (salsa al tartufo nero) makes a compact, genuinely delicious souvenir that travels well.
Cheese, Bread and a Picnic Plan
Several stalls sell aged Umbrian pecorino at various stages of maturity — ask for stagionato for a firmer, sharper wedge, or semi-stagionato if you prefer something creamier. Pair it with a loaf of pane di casa from the bread stall on the Piazza Matteotti side.
By 10:00 the market is in full swing and the café tables around the piazza are occupied by locals reading the paper over a cornetto. Join them, then assemble a picnic and head up to the Rocca Maggiore gardens — it is the perfect Assisi morning.
