Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi

The double-decker basilica built over St Francis's tomb is one of Christianity's most breathtaking pilgrimage sites — and an unmissable art history lesson wrapped in pink-and-white Umbrian stone. Cimabue and Giotto painted these walls in the 13th century, essentially inventing the Renaissance before anyone had named it.

Upper and Lower Church

The Lower Basilica is dim, candlelit and intensely atmospheric, its vaulted ceiling glittering with Cimabue's Byzantine-inflected frescoes and Simone Martini's radiant scenes from the life of St Martin of Tours in the Cappella di San Martino.

Climb to the Upper Basilica for Giotto's famous 28-panel cycle on the life of St Francis — each scene crisp, human and emotionally direct in a way that was revolutionary for 1297. Stand in the middle of the nave and turn slowly; the storytelling surrounds you completely.

The Crypt and Piazza Inferiore

Descend below the Lower Church to the bare stone crypt where St Francis is buried alongside four of his closest companions. The simplicity is striking after the painted splendour above — a single rough sarcophagus, soft lighting, near-silence.

Outside, the wide Piazza Inferiore fills with pilgrims and swallows in equal measure at dusk. Grab a spot on the low wall facing the façade and watch the last light turn the travertine gold — it costs nothing and photographs magnificently.
