The museum houses a fantastic collection of artefacts and information about the history of this gorgeous district, including displays on early Māori life in the area that provide essential context often missing from Queenstown's visitor experience. Gold-rush-era tools, personal diaries, currency and photographs fill the galleries with real human detail rather than theme-park gloss.
A dedicated section tells the story of Arrowtown's Chinese community — miners who arrived from the 1860s onward and faced severe discrimination, including restrictive poll taxes and land-use laws. The storytelling is frank and respectful, making this one of the most thought-provoking small museums in New Zealand.
The Art Gallery & Surrounds
