Dune du Pilat
Rising 106 metres above the Arcachon Basin, the Dune du Pilat is a living, shifting mountain of golden sand that swallows pine trees whole and rewards every breathless climb with a panorama that stretches from the Atlantic to the Landes forest.
The Climb & the View
Wooden staircases help you scale the steep seaward face, but the real thrill is kicking off your shoes and feeling the warm sand between your toes as you crest the ridge and the full sweep of the Bassin d'Arcachon opens before you.
To the west, the ocean rolls in with serious Atlantic swell; to the east, an unbroken carpet of maritime pines stretches to the horizon. Arrive at sunrise and you'll often have the summit almost entirely to yourself.
Practical Tips & Timing
The dune is at its most photogenic in the golden hour before sunset, when the sand glows amber and long shadows carve dramatic ridges across the face.
Parking fills fast in July and August; the paid car park at the base opens at 07:30. Wear sunscreen and bring water — there is no shade whatsoever on the dune itself.
A small entrance fee (around €3–4 per vehicle) is charged in high season. The site is accessible year-round, but spring and autumn offer cooler temperatures and thinner crowds.
