Chez Boulan (La Cabane du Mimbeau)
Perched on wooden stilts over the water at the Mimbeau oyster port in Piraillan, this classic cabane ostréicole strips oyster-eating back to its elemental pleasure: a tin roof overhead, the basin glittering below, and a plate of just-harvested huîtres with a wedge of rye bread and salted butter.
The Cabane Experience
Oyster cabanes are the defining culinary institution of the Arcachon Basin — working sheds where oystermen shuck and sell directly to the public at long communal tables. Chez Boulan at Mimbeau is one of the most atmospheric, with unobstructed views across the water toward the Île aux Oiseaux and its famous wooden tchanquées (stilt houses).
Order a plateau of mixed sizes — from fines de claires to the larger spéciales — alongside a bottle of chilled Bordeaux Blanc or a local Picpoul de Pinet. Portions are generous and prices are refreshingly honest.
Getting There & What Else to Order
Piraillan is about 30 km north of Arcachon on the Cap Ferret peninsula; the drive along the basin shore road is itself a pleasure. Arrive before noon on weekends in summer or you will queue.
Beyond oysters, most cabanes serve moules marinières, smoked eel rillettes and a simple dessert of local cake. It is not fine dining — it is better than that.
