The garden and its dragon
The Sogenchi Pond Garden is Japan's first designated Special Scenic Beauty and Historic Site — a title that tells you everything. Walk the gravel circuit and watch the crystal pond mirror the mountains above; in autumn the maples here are among the most photogenic in all of Kyoto.
Inside the Hatto (Dharma Hall), a vast ceiling painting of a cloud dragon — the Unryu-zu — stares down with an intensity that stops visitors in their tracks. The Hatto is open on weekends, public holidays, and during designated spring and autumn periods; a separate ¥500 ticket is required.
Connecting to the bamboo grove
The garden's back gate opens directly onto the bamboo grove's northern end, making Tenryu-ji the perfect anchor for an Arashiyama morning: start in the garden, then flow seamlessly into the bamboo tunnel without retracing a single step.
The garden-only ticket is sufficient for most visitors and covers the full pond circuit. Add the ¥300 main hall surcharge if you want to sit on the tatami veranda and observe the garden from inside — a perspective that reveals just how masterfully the mountains have been framed.
