Iwatayama Monkey Park — Arashiyama's Panoramic Secret
Most visitors to Arashiyama never look up — but a 20-minute hike up the forested hillside south of Togetsukyo Bridge leads to Iwatayama Monkey Park, home to over 100 wild Japanese macaques and one of the best elevated panoramas of the entire Kyoto basin you can reach on foot. It's one of those spots that rewards the curious traveller who goes slightly off-script.
The monkeys and the view
Around 120 wild Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) roam freely across the hillside here — and the dynamic is memorably inverted from a zoo: the humans stand inside a feeding hut while the monkeys wander freely outside and peer in through the wire mesh to receive snacks. It is genuinely funny and endearing in equal measure.
From the summit observation area, the panoramic view sweeps across the Katsura River, the Togetsukyo Bridge below, and the Kyoto city basin stretching to the eastern mountains. It is one of the few elevated viewpoints near central Arashiyama that requires no special equipment or transport to reach.
Practical details
The trail begins just south of Togetsukyo Bridge on the west bank of the river — look for the ticket gate at the base of the hill. The climb is moderate and takes about 20 minutes at a comfortable pace; wear shoes you don't mind getting dusty.
Do not bring food in your hands or visible bags on the hillside — the macaques are wild and will investigate. Feed them only inside the designated hut, using food purchased at the summit. Early morning visits see the monkeys most active and the light over Kyoto at its best.
