Iglesia de Santa María la Real

Rising above Aranda's Plaza del Trigo, the Iglesia de Santa María la Real is one of the finest late-Gothic churches in Castile, its elaborately carved Isabelline portal so detailed it looks more like lacework than stonework. Queen Isabella I herself attended mass here in 1503, and the building has barely changed since.

The Isabelline Portal

The south portal is the showpiece: a cascade of flamboyant Gothic carving that frames biblical scenes, heraldic shields and intricate vegetal tracery in warm honey-coloured limestone. Architects and art historians rate it alongside the façade of San Pablo in Valladolid as a defining example of the Isabelline style that flourished under Ferdinand and Isabella.

Spend time with binoculars or a telephoto lens — the upper registers contain dozens of tiny figures that most visitors miss entirely. Morning light hits the portal at its most flattering angle, picking out the relief carving in sharp shadow.

Inside the Church

The interior is a single broad nave with elegant star-vaulted ceilings and a carved stone pulpit dating to the 16th century. The retablo mayor has been partially restored and gives a vivid sense of how dazzlingly coloured these altarpieces would have been when first painted.

Entry is free during mass hours; a small donation is appreciated. The church sits directly on Plaza del Trigo, Aranda's secondary square, which is quieter than Plaza Mayor and lined with stone arcades perfect for a shaded coffee after your visit.
