Bat Cave Beach (Western Shore)
On Angaur's quieter western flank, Bat Cave Beach earns its name from the fruit-bat colony roosting in the limestone cave just above the tideline — at dusk, thousands of bats pour out in a rustling black ribbon against the pink sky. Below them, the sand is white and the water crystalline.
The Beach Itself
Bat Cave Beach is one of Angaur's most popular beaches, known for its crystal-clear waters and white sand — yet because Angaur sees so few visitors overall, you will almost certainly have it to yourself on a weekday. The reef just offshore is shallow enough to snorkel without a boat, and the coral gardens shelter parrotfish, butterflyfish, and the occasional hawksbill turtle.
The western exposure means the beach catches the afternoon sun perfectly and faces directly into the sunset — bring a picnic, find a piece of driftwood to lean against, and let the evening come to you.
The Bat Cave
The cave itself sits just back from the beach and is home to thousands of fruit bats that roost through the day and erupt outward at dusk in one of Angaur's most theatrical natural displays. The cave interior is dark and the guano smell is strong, so most visitors are content to watch the exodus from the beach rather than venture deep inside.
Angaur's wildlife also includes coconut crabs and monitor lizards that can be spotted around the cave entrance and along the beach fringe, particularly in the cooler hours of early morning and late afternoon.
Practicalities
There are no facilities at Bat Cave Beach — no toilets, no vendors, no shade structures — so bring everything you need including drinking water and sunscreen. The track from the village is passable on a bicycle or on foot in about 20–30 minutes.
Snorkelling gear is worth bringing from Koror as rental options on the island are limited. The best underwater visibility coincides with the dry-season calm from December through April, when the reef lies flat as glass.
