Angaur Lighthouse Viewpoint

A short scramble up coral rubble brings you to the concrete stub of Angaur's 1930s-era lighthouse — and the panorama from the top is one of the most dramatic in all of Palau. On one side the lagoon glows emerald-blue; on the other, the open Pacific darkens to indigo at the horizon.

The Climb and the Reward

The lighthouse itself is a modest, weathered structure, but that is not the point — the point is the 360-degree view it unlocks. From the top the whole atoll unfurls: emerald-blue lagoon on one side, darker Pacific on the other, with the island's fringing reef visible as a pale line of churning white water far below.

Wind is almost always present up here, carrying a faint salt-and-seaweed scent from the reef flat. On clear days — common during the December-to-April dry season — you can make out the silhouette of Peleliu to the north.

Getting There

The path to the lighthouse involves a 10-minute scramble over coral rubble, so solid closed-toe shoes are non-negotiable. Coral chunks are knife-sharp and flip-flops will split on the jagged surface — consider yourself warned.

There are no signs pointing the way, so ask a local or your guesthouse host for the current best approach. The route changes slightly as vegetation grows back after storms, but any islander will point you in the right direction in seconds.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise is the undisputed prime time: the low-angle light turns the lagoon a luminous gold-green and the air is cool enough to make the scramble enjoyable. By midday the exposed coral platform offers zero shade and the surface radiates heat.

Bring water, a wide-angle lens for the panoramic shot, and a telephoto for picking out sea birds riding the thermals below the lighthouse rim. Frigatebirds and tropicbirds are frequently spotted from this elevation.
