Hwasun Golden Sand Beach (화순금모래해수욕장)

Hwasun-ri in Andeok-myeon hides one of western Jeju's most under-visited beaches — a sweep of warm golden sand dramatically framed by black volcanic rock formations that plunge straight into the turquoise sea. It is the kind of beach where you feel like you have genuinely found something the guidebooks forgot.

Volcanic Drama on the Shore

The contrast here is what makes Hwasun unforgettable: fine golden sand — unusual on a coastline dominated by dark basalt — set against jagged black lava outcrops and the deep blue of the South Sea. The volcanic rock creates natural pools and sheltered coves that are perfect for paddling and snorkelling.

The beach is backed by low dunes and coastal scrub rather than a resort strip, keeping the atmosphere calm and local even in summer. Families with children appreciate the relatively gentle slope into the water and the natural windbreaks formed by the lava formations.

Seafood & Haenyeo Culture

Hwasun-ri is a working fishing village, and the haenyeo — Jeju's legendary free-diving women — still operate along this stretch of coast. If you are lucky, you will see them returning from a dive with fresh abalone or sea urchin, which local restaurants near the beach serve simply grilled or as raw sashimi.

Pick up a bowl of jeonbok-juk (abalone porridge) at one of the small eateries in the village — it is the quintessential Jeju coastal meal, creamy and deeply savoury, and far cheaper here than in Seogwipo city.

Getting There & Nearby Stops

Hwasun Golden Sand Beach is in Hwasun-ri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si — a short drive south from O'Sulloc Tea Museum or Camellia Hill, making it an easy afternoon add-on after a morning at either attraction.

The beach is quietest on weekday mornings. Andeok's coastal location means it is less busy than Jeju City or Aewol, ideal for travellers seeking a slower-paced, genuinely local seaside experience.
