The reward for stopping is one of the island's most serene, crowd-free hours in nature.
A Valley Carved by Volcanic Time
The valley takes its name from 'Chianchideok' — a view of meandering streams and rocks — and it earns that name at every bend. Rock cliffs rise like folding screens above a clear stream that flows year-round over smooth bedrock, even in the driest months.
The surrounding subtropical primeval forest shelters 300 species of plants, including Siebold's chinquapin, silver magnolia, and camellia. That biodiversity earned it Natural Monument status in 1986, and collecting plants or disturbing wildlife is strictly prohibited.
What to Look For on the Trail
Keep your eyes open for the ancient stone wells and the Rock Shade Residence — shelters formed from volcanic lava that Jeju's earliest inhabitants used as protection from the elements. These rough-hewn lava cavities are a quiet reminder that people have lived in this valley for thousands of years.
The valley's beauty was not lost on Joseon-era scholar Chusa Kim Jeong-hee, who reportedly visited regularly for contemplation. The whole trail takes about an hour at a relaxed pace — wear light hiking shoes, as some sections are on damp basalt.
