Gaasperpark & Gaasperplas Lake
Tucked into the southeastern corner of Amsterdam, Gaasperpark is a sprawling 220-hectare green lung that most visitors never discover, yet it's one of the largest and most beautiful urban parks in the entire city. At its heart sits the Gaasperplas, a wide recreational lake where locals windsurf, swim and picnic all summer long.
A Lake Made for Lazy Days
The Gaasperplas was created in the 1970s as a flood-management reservoir and quickly became a beloved recreational spot for the Zuidoost community. Sandy beaches ring the southern shore where families set up for the day, children splash in designated swimming zones and kayakers drift past without a care.
Water quality is monitored regularly by the municipality and consistently meets EU bathing water standards, making it genuinely safe for a summer swim — a rarity in urban Amsterdam where most canals are off-limits for swimming.
Cycling & Wildlife Around the Park
A well-signed cycle path loops the entire park, passing through woodland, open meadows and a Japanese-style garden that bursts into colour in spring. Birdwatchers regularly spot great crested grebes, kingfishers and grey herons along the quieter northern inlets.
The park hosted the 1972 Floriade horticultural expo and remnants of that landscaping still give it a pleasantly curated feel amid the wilder sections. Rent a bike at Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station and you're at the park entrance in under ten minutes.
