Albert Cuyp Market

Stretching for over a kilometre along Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp, Albert Cuyp Market is the largest outdoor market in the Netherlands and the place where locals actually shop. Six days a week it erupts into a brilliant, noisy pageant of stroopwafels, raw herring, vintage fabrics and fresh-cut flowers.

What to Eat and Buy

Start with a warm stroopwafel pressed to order — the caramel-syrup filling oozes when the waffle is fresh off the iron, and nothing else comes close. Follow it with a paper cone of raw Hollandse nieuwe herring topped with raw onion and gherkin, the classic Dutch street snack that divides tourists and unites locals.

Beyond food, stalls sell everything from Moroccan spices and Indonesian sambal to second-hand denim, cheap tulip bulbs and handmade leather bags. It rewards slow, aimless wandering far more than a shopping list.

When to Go and How to Explore

Monday to Saturday, roughly 09:00 to 17:00, the market is in full swing. Saturday draws the biggest crowds but also the most atmosphere; arrive before 11:00 if you want elbow room at the food stalls.

After browsing, duck into one of the brown cafés on the surrounding streets for a jenever (Dutch gin) or a small beer — Café Sarphaat on nearby Sarphatipark is a favourite with market regulars.
