Roc de Frausa Ridge Viewpoint
Drive or hike to the Roc de Frausa ridge on the Spanish border above Amélie-les-Bains and you'll be rewarded with one of the most dramatic panoramas in the eastern Pyrenees — the Mediterranean glittering to the east, the snow-capped peaks of the Canigou massif to the west, and the whole Vallespir spread below you.
Getting to the top
From Amélie-les-Bains, the D3 road winds south through cork-oak scrubland toward the Col de Paracolls at 794 m, which is driveable in a standard car. From the col, a well-marked GR footpath continues on foot to the Roc de Frausa at 1,450 m — allow around two hours each way at a comfortable pace.
The trail passes through the Réserve Naturelle de la Massane, one of France's oldest protected forests, where ancient beech trees and rare beetles make it a UNESCO-listed site. Bring water; there are no facilities on the ridge.
What you'll see at the summit
On a clear morning — and clarity is common in the dry Tramontane wind — you can see the Gulf of Lion from Cap Leucate all the way south to the Costa Brava. The Canigou, sacred mountain of the Catalans, dominates the western skyline at 2,784 m.
Sunrise here is extraordinary: the first light catches the Mediterranean before flooding the valley below in gold. A handful of hikers camp near the ridge to catch it, though you'll need to carry everything up yourself.
