Gorges de Mondony
Less than two kilometres from the thermal baths, the Tech's tributary stream has carved the Gorges de Mondony into a tight slot of pink granite walls draped in ferns and mosses. Most visitors to Amélie-les-Bains never find it, yet it's one of the most beautiful short walks in the eastern Pyrenees.
The walk into the gorge
The trail begins at the end of the Chemin du Mondony, a quiet lane that leaves the spa town from behind the upper thermal buildings. Within minutes you're in deep shade, following a clear turquoise stream over stepping stones and past natural rock pools cold enough to make you gasp.
The path is maintained but involves some scrambling over boulders — wear proper shoes. The full gorge walk to the Refuge de Mondony takes about 90 minutes one way and gains around 400 m in altitude, passing two small waterfalls en route.
Wildlife and swimming holes
The gorge is a habitat for the Pyrenean desman, a rare aquatic mole found only in fast Pyrenean streams, and for fire salamanders that emerge on the damp rock faces after rain. Birdwatchers should watch for the white-throated dipper bobbing on mid-stream boulders.
Several natural rock pools along the lower section are deep enough for a cold, bracing dip in summer. Locals know them well; tourists almost never do. The water is snowmelt-fed and bracingly cold even in August, which keeps the crowds away and the experience pristine.
