Tahimamavi Freshwater Springs
Fed by rainwater filtering down through Ambae's ancient volcanic rock, the Tahimamavi springs bubble up from the earth in a setting of fern-draped boulders and cathedral-canopy rainforest. Crystal-clear, naturally cool, and almost entirely off the tourist radar, they are the island's best-kept swimming secret.
The Springs Themselves
The water emerges remarkably clear and cool — a shock of refreshment after a sweaty jungle walk. Natural pools have formed where the springs collect before trickling toward the coast, deep enough to swim in and ringed by mossy rocks that double as sunbathing ledges.
The surrounding forest is alive with birdsong: Ambae is rated among the best birdwatching destinations in the country, and the springs' shaded canopy draws species that are harder to spot on the open coast. Bring binoculars and patience.
Getting There
Tahimamavi is reached on foot from the nearby road, guided by a local who knows the unmarked trail — attempting it solo risks getting turned around in the dense vegetation. The walk itself is part of the reward: you pass through gardens of taro and island cabbage, and villagers along the path will almost certainly invite you to stop for a coconut.
The springs sit in the interior of the island, away from the volcanic summit zone, making them accessible year-round regardless of volcanic alert levels. The trail is muddy after rain, so waterproof sandals or trail shoes are strongly recommended.
Combining the Visit
Pair a morning at Tahimamavi with an afternoon at Lolovoli, the central part of the island known for its beautiful beaches and natural pools — together they make a perfect full day of Ambae's freshwater and coastal beauty.
Ask your guesthouse host in Saratamata or Lolovoli to arrange a local guide the evening before. The springs are on customary land and a small kastom (custom) fee paid to the landowner is both expected and entirely reasonable.
