Lake Voui (Manaro Voui) Crater Hike
Perched at roughly 1,400 m above sea level inside an active caldera, Lake Voui is one of the largest and most dramatic crater lakes on Earth — its surface shifts between jade green and slate grey depending on the volcano's mood. The full-day guided ascent through tropical gardens, cloud-forest air, and lava plains is the single most unforgettable thing you can do on Ambae.
The Hike Up
The trail begins at the ring of coastal villages and climbs steadily through dense rainforest before breaking into cooler, mist-wrapped cloud zone. Volcanic soil underfoot gives way to bare lava fields as you near the summit caldera, where the air smells faintly of sulphur and the silence becomes almost ceremonial.
Inside the broad 12-km-wide caldera sit three crater lakes — Manaro Voui, Manaro Ngoro, and Manaro Lakua — each with its own colour and character. Lake Voui, at 2.1 km across, is the main event: a vast acidic body of water sitting directly over active vents, watched over by guides who know exactly how close is safe.
Cultural & Spiritual Weight
Local communities on Ambae regard the summit as a place where the spirit world feels close, and guides lead visitors with quiet, respectful energy. Many families speak of the high caldera not as a viewpoint to tick off, but as living sacred ground — listening to that perspective transforms a hike into something genuinely moving.
The 2017–2018 eruptions sent ash plumes 10–12 km high and forced the evacuation of the entire island's roughly 11,000 residents. That history is woven into every conversation you'll have at the trailhead — ask your guide about it and prepare to be humbled.
Practical Prep
Start before dawn to reach the crater rim before cloud builds and obscures the views. Bring at least 3 litres of water, a rain layer, and sturdy boots — the trail is steep and can be slippery after rain.
Access is arranged through village guides rather than a fixed ticket booth; fees are negotiated locally and support the community directly. Always check the current Vanuatu Meteorological & Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) alert level before committing — the volcano sits at Alert Level 2 on a 0–5 scale, meaning the crater rim zone requires real caution.
