Mirador del Fornet
Tucked on the northern edge of Altea's old town ridge, the Mirador del Fornet is a small but spectacular belvedere that delivers arguably the finest unobstructed sunset panorama on the Costa Blanca — a 180-degree sweep from the Cap d'Or headland to the Sierra Helada and across to the bay of Altea.
The View Itself
From this terrace you look directly down over the terracotta rooftops of the old town, the blue-domed church and the silver ribbon of the Passeig Marítim, with the deep cobalt of the Mediterranean stretching to the horizon. On exceptionally clear winter days, the silhouette of Ibiza is visible roughly 130 km offshore.
The viewpoint is oriented almost perfectly west-southwest, meaning the setting sun drops directly over the sea in summer — a photographer's dream that draws a small, appreciative crowd of locals and visitors every evening.
Getting There and When to Go
The mirador is reached via a short, stepped lane behind the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo; follow signs reading 'Mirador' from the Plaza de la Iglesia. The walk from the square takes under three minutes.
For the most dramatic light, arrive 30 minutes before official sunset and stay 15 minutes after — the alpenglow on the Sierra de Bernia mountains behind you turns them deep rose while the sea ahead shifts from gold to violet. Bring a light layer; the ridge catches a breeze even in summer.
