Altea Old Town (Casc Antic)
Perched on a hilltop above the Costa Blanca, Altea's old quarter is a labyrinth of cobbled lanes, bougainvillea-draped doorways and whitewashed houses that tumble down toward a shimmering Mediterranean horizon. It is arguably the most photogenic village centre on the entire Valencian coast.
The Heart of the Village
Plaza de la Iglesia is the undisputed centrepiece — a broad terracotta-paved square presided over by the iconic blue-and-white tiled dome of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. Arrive at golden hour and the dome glows like a lantern against the darkening sky.
The streets radiating from the square are lined with independent art galleries, ceramic workshops and tiny café terraces. Altea has cultivated a genuine artists' colony since the 1960s, and that creative energy is still palpable in every hand-painted tile and sculpture tucked into a wall niche.
Exploring the Lanes
Wander downhill along Carrer Major to find the oldest residential streets, where neighbours hang washing between balconies and cats doze on sun-warmed steps — a slice of authentic Valencian village life untouched by mass tourism.
Don't miss the panoramic mirador at the top of the old town, just behind the church, which frames a sweeping view over the bay, the Serra Gelada headland and, on clear days, the distant outline of Ibiza on the horizon.
